  • Cosplay Responsibly Series: Part 4 - Cosplay Etiquette: The Unwritten Rules

Cosplay is more than just dressing up; it's a form of expression, a celebration of fandom, and a creative outlet. However, within this dynamic and exciting community, there exist unwritten rules or guidelines that aim to make the experience enjoyable and respectful for everyone involved. Adhering to these unspoken regulations ensures not just your enjoyment but also the well-being and comfort of fellow cosplayers and even spectators.

    Seeking Photo Permission

We've all been there—seeing an awe-inspiring costume and wanting to capture it on our smartphones. But the rule of thumb here is simple: Always ask for permission. While most cosplayers are happy to pose for a photo, getting explicit permission is a matter of respect and courtesy.

    Appreciating Craftsmanship

Cosplaying often involves intricate detailing, hours of stitching, and tons of creativity. Always appreciate the effort that goes into each costume. If you admire someone's work, let them know. Compliments can go a long way in making someone's day, but be sure your praises are genuine.

    Don't Touch Without Permission

The rule of "look but don't touch" isn't just for museums; it applies to cosplayers too. Many costumes have fragile pieces, and some people have personal boundaries. Always ask for permission before you touch someone's outfit, props, or even offer a hug.

    Respect Personal Space

Cons and events can get crowded, but that doesn't mean personal space should be compromised. Keep a respectful distance from others, especially when you're in larger costumes that might have pieces extending into someone else's area.

    Handling Criticism and Negativity

Cosplay is for everyone, regardless of age, size, or skill level. If you come across someone who is new to the scene or who may not have the most polished costume, offer words of encouragement instead of criticism. Negativity has no place in a community built on mutual respect and admiration.

    Crediting Designers and Photographers

If you post pictures on social media, always give credit where it's due. Tag the cosplayer, photographer, and even the designer if possible. It's a small gesture that can mean a lot to the creators involved.

The Do's and Don'ts of Panel Etiquette

When attending panels, always be mindful of the time and avoid asking long-winded questions. Listen attentively, and don't distract others by talking or using your phone. Remember, everyone is there to enjoy and learn something new.

Cosplay is a fantastic hobby that combines art, acting, and socializing, but it's essential to approach it responsibly. Being aware of the unwritten rules in the cosplay community ensures that everyone can have a good time without stepping on anyone's toes—literally or metaphorically.
